Are You Able to Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Forged the Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to the mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, that converted logs into boards with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels more quickly than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. A single part converted the circular movement into vertical action to power the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement advancing the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Every component was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate them in order that they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every descending motion while moving with each return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of basic components.”
